Satkosia Gorge is a gorge in eastern Odisha, India, carved by the Mahanadi River. The gorge is located within the Satkosia Tiger Reserve which is a United nations Protected area. The gorge is created by the Mahanadi river cutting the eastern Ghats. The gorge is approximately 22 km (14 mi) in length. The gorge and the surrounding area were declared as a tiger sanctuary in 2007. Geologically Satkosia gorge is part of the Eastern Ghats .It separates the Chhota Nagpur Plateau from the Eastern Ghats.
The Mahanadi flowing through a gorge stretching 22 KM makes for an awe inspiring sight. The Satkosia Tiger Reserve encompasses an area of 963.87 Sq KM, once it was a part of AbhayaAranya (Unending Forest range) which connected Odisha to Central India.The name Satkosia literally means 7 Kos (a unit of distance measurement. Usually 1 Kos – 1.3 KM depending on the region). It is also known as the Gorge Sanctuary. The place is bursting with flora and fauna and is a coveted destination for the nature lovers. Satkosia Tiger Reserve hosts some of the attractive tourism destinations with night stay at multiple points within the sanctuary, each showcasing a unique characteristics of this beautiful haven.
Tikarpada Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most important tourist sites in Odisha and spreads across an area of 795.52 sq km. It is located on the banks of River Mahanadi, about 140 km from Bhubaneswar. The sanctuary is famous for its gharial or crocodile species. Besides these, tourists can also spot tigers, pangolins, leopards, spotted deer, elephants, rhesus, macaques, snakes, turtles etc. The sanctuary is circled by the Satkosia gorge, which has been formed by River Mahanadi. The Gharwale Sanctuary located here is a breeding place for gharials. One can also spot a variety of snakes and turtles in it. There is also a preservation centre here to help preserve the gharial population. On the left side of the gorge lies the Tikarpada Crocodile Sanctuary, known for its amazing forest and teeming wildlife. One can also take part in various adventure sports here like river rafting, trekking, fish angling, boating etc.
